The Trimble routing algorithm is being updated to provide more accurate estimated travel times (ETT) in applications including CoPilot, PC*Miler, and PC*Miler Web Services. As a result of this change, customers may see an increase in ETT for most routes.

Why is this change happening?

Trimble is always exploring ways to enhance routing calculations to provide customers with the most accurate travel times. Based on customer feedback, our routing team studied the difference between computed ETT and actual ETT in hundreds of thousands of customer routes. The routes were randomly (and anonymously) sampled from RouteReporter, Trimble’s post-trip route analysis web tool.

The study found that the accuracy of ETTs improved significantly by fine-tuning the speed of travel (road speeds) used in estimates, which increases travel times.

When will the ETT update happen?

The Trimble routing algorithm is used in all applications, and this update will be rolled out gradually during major product releases in the coming months. The ETT change will be released in:

July 2024

  • PC*Miler 38 installed (on prem) software. The ETT update will not be included by default in the on prem release of PC*Miler. Customers, however, can contact us if they would like to add the update to their installation.
  • PC*Miler Web. The ETT update will be included by default for users who have Reports set to Current, which is the default setting. Any other PC*Miler version will continue using existing ETT calculations. Customers can also contact us if they would like to revert back to previous ETTs, while still using Current.
  • PC*Miler Web Services. The ETT update will be included by default for users who have dataVersion set to Current, which is the default setting. Any other PC*Miler version will continue using existing ETT calculations. Customers can also contact us if they would like to revert back to previous ETTs, while still using Current.
  • Appian DirectRoute, DRTrack, and Daily Planner customers who use PC*Miler Web Services will receive the update at the same time as the Web Services release. Customers can also contact us if they would like to revert back to previous ETTs.

Should I expect all ETT calculations to increase?

While road speeds are a key element in ETT calculations, other factors come into play, especially for customers who use our live traffic service. While an ETT increase is generally expected, results may vary for individual routes.

In routes that use our optimization engines or have specific time windows, it is also possible that this ETT change could affect how stops are ordered when a route is planned.
